BWBH president Lejla Tinjić-Zaimović at 2025 Sarajevo Fellowship: “We are resilient!”
The fifth day of the 2025 Sarajevo Fellowship began with a powerful panel: Diaspora Panel: How Can the Global Bosnian Community Contribute? , moderated by Zarja Marković-Kosorić Marković. Speakers Lejla Tinjić-Zaimović, Elma Oručević, and Samira Sulejmanovic Suleymanović reflected on challenges of systemic disconnect, the importance of visibility for women, and the quiet strength of simply showing up and being present.
The panel also addressed diaspora frustrations, the rise of the far right, and the ongoing need for connection, courage, and long-term commitment.
The second session of Day 5, The Role of Activism and Education in Advancing Reconciliation, was led by HIA Senior Fellow Samir Beharić. Through a powerful and interactive discussion, participants explored how segregated education systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina deepen social divisions and reinforce corruption. Samir reflected on the grand narrative of separation, highlighting both problematic examples- such as nationalist-driven curricula in Republika Srpska – and positive stories of unity, including interfaith support and community-led initiatives. The session emphasized the crucial roles of parents, educators, activists, and media in shaping narratives of reconciliation and fostering inclusive civic spaces.
The final session invited fellows into small group dialogues for Reflective Conversations: What Have We Learned? Participants reflected on what challenged their assumptions, what moved them, and what they now feel responsible for. Questions around silence and complicity, ethnic division, and the unseen layers of power and identity sparked thoughtful.
